I do know a couple but no one that has been through the smog referee process yet(in a newer JK). I was in the process of doing a Motech LS swap in my Jeep but ran into soooo many issues with Ca. smog and the cost to do it rising to over 24K that it wasn't worth the hassle to me. I've read some horror stories with people trying to smog or re-smog every two years having issue because the laws change. I talked to 4 companies here in ca that would do the swap and none guaranteed it to pass smog, one other Co. would do the some cert. but the price started at 1250 and that was no guarantee it would pass or how long it would take. Motech says their kit is Ca compliant but the co. that would take it to pass smog said it's not that easy. So with all the smog issues i just decided to put a RIPP SC in that is CARB compliant. Every shop i talked to also said register your vehicle out of state or get an LLC or do whatever you have to do to not deal with Ca. smog.

I would like to do a HEMI swap. I have a HEMI in my Charger and love it.

This is on my radar for the project build. I personally do not have the expertise to do the swap myself, so I'll be looking for a company to complete the work. There used to be a company that would keep it thru the certification and SMOG process, however it looks like that is no longer the case as Chappy had already mentioned. I was talking with one of our members (Tony) who did the Bradshaw trail with us and he had provided me a referee contact in the DMV. I am going to reach out to that person and have a long discussion on what is required. In the meantime, I can share what information he provided me: He had this to say: - Donor engine should be newer than the Jeep. (Engine will exceed the Jeep's MY smog requirements,) - Ensure the Engine is installed with all the OEM equipment (i.e. ECM, harness, sensors, catalytic system,) and that it mates correctly with the Jeep. - Website: www.bar.ca.gov/Industry/Engine_Change_Guidelines.html

You also can't remove the Chrysler ECM which means they both have to work together. You also need the same transmission out of the donor. Ca. also requires you now have to have the VIN written into the new ECM which means it has to go to the dealer. There are only like 30 referees in Ca. that can look and pass your vehicle for inspection, that's the persons you need to talk to.

From all of the articles I had read, the LS swap mates completely up with the Chrysler ECM, specifically with things like throwing engine codes. Also management and tuning is easier than with the Hemi model swaps. One of the companies that do this work, Bruiser Conversaions has this to say about the transmission:
The WA580, which comes standard in 2012+ Jeep Wranglers, in its factory form is rated for 550HP and 500 ft-lbs of torque. With the Bruiser Conversions LS Conversion, the transmission can be modified to handle upwards of 1000hp. This transmission has been used in many applications including Mercedes, Porsche, Sprinter Vans, SRT-Challengers, SRT-Chargers, SRT-Grand Cherokees. It is also known as the 5G-tronic or NAG1 depending on the application.
2007 - 2011 Jeep Wranglers require the WA580. In these years it is necessary for Bruiser Conversions to upgrade the existing transmission (42RLE) with the 2012+ WA580. This also requires a factory 2012+ wiring harness and TCM to communicate. The center console and shifter also need to be upgraded to a 2012+ model to enable full functionality of factory transmission. This is to maintain tap shift capabilities and prindle functionality on the factory dash to show your current gear. Cruise control and autostart are maintained. Cooling fan is upgraded to 2012+ based on its cooling capabilities
I did not know about the VIN and dealer requirements. That is gonna have to be added to the list on items I need to follow-up on. I despise going to the dealer for warranty/recall work, let alone taking it in for something that I need to have them do...Grrrr...

yes I think that works for other states but not Ca. The VIN is new. With Laws changing every year you may be good one year then out of compliance the next in Ca. which is another reason I did the SC. I need to move out of state so I can get a V8.

Insanity I tell you!

This is not Ca related but there is another thread on a jk forum where an AZ resident took his Jeep to motech to have a LS swap, registered and smogged it is AZ then the next time he had to smog it he was out of compliance and Jeep got flagged by the state as being modified and couldn't take it anywhere else to get smogged. I haven't seen the thread come up in a while and\or if it got resolved by Motech or had to pay to get it in compliance again but that was my fear in Ca. where you maybe in compliance one year then out the next, having spent 20K then another 1-2K for crap like this. If I had endless funds then no problem, at the time(and still is) this is my DD so having issue to deal with like that was just a big issue for me to have to deal with. Maybe if this was a toy and could sit for month trying to figure thing out I might have done the swap. To me it's just easier to move out of state...LOL
