Can anyone recommend a good OFF-ROAD GPS unit that will cover most of the trails out there and doesn't cost a fortune? thanks

I'm not sure if the ipad mini has gps built in. That's why I went with the nexus7 is because it had built in GPS so you can use maps off-line.

Yeah it works with the maps offline just needs to use a bunch of the hard drive for storage but has no g-s location unless I use my unlimited cell place a create a hot spot for it. We shall see how it works going to try it both ways.

I use an iPad mini cellular with no SIM card. GPS IS FINE. In conjunction with that I use GAIAGPS nav ($20 at App Store) ($40 /pro version) Android available also. Prior to a trip I can download any topo map, Street map or so on and use when not in Wi-Fi. Much like Google maps offline works. . I can also create tracks with waypoints and upload them from my desktop and then download the .gpx or .kml file from the site to my iPad. When on the trail you see your location and can lay down a track, nav to your waypoints and so on. I'm still learning how to use it but so far works like a charm. here is the Dos Cabezos run I did with the club last Oct: www.gaiagps.com/datasummary/track/9a93f28a82b362048158d783b5bf1adc/?layer=CalTopo
