The next question after "What size lift should I get" is typically "What size tires can I fit on my Jeep", however what most people forget is that when you change the size of your tires from the OEM size, there are a few items that are affected by upgrading the tire size. - Axle Gearing
- Engine RPM
- Speedometer/Mileage
- Gas Mileage (who cares, its a Jeep baby!)
A good site that provides very informative details and displays a suggested chart on optimal gearing (based on the model Wrangler) can be found here: www.extremeterrain.com/regear-jeep-wrangler-explained.htmlback in 1995 when I had my YJ, I installed 33" tires on it and left the OEM gearing in place (3.07). I had a manual transmission and I just all but lost my 5th gear and forget about it if I wanted to pass someone on the highway! Once I upgraded to 4.10 gears everything was back to normal and I could actual accelerate into 5th gear! So, when you are thinking about getting those larger tires installed on your Jeep, keep in mind the changes you may also need to make to other components in the Jeep. Regearing is not a cheap upgrade, so plan accordingly....and you might as well get lockers added while you are at it!
