CO2 is pressurized and in liquid form inside the tank. This gives the ability to fill many more tires than just pressurized air. Because of the properties of CO2 the tank always has around 300 psi unless you regulate it down. It stays at this pressure if you just filled it up or if you are the very end. The tanks can be filled up at AirGas or I Use a welding supply store in Temecula near my home. They charge me $28 to fill a 15 lb tank. When I was running stock tires I was able to fill 40 tires. With 37s I get about 16 tires per tank so 4 trails. The other advantage is speed. I can take all 4 of my 37s from 15 to 30 psi faster than someone can fill one stock tire using a pump.

You can do CO2 setups with off the shelf components. You can find cheap CO2 cylinders online all the time from people's home brewing setups and what not. Just make sure it has a hydrotest date. Though that's not required you can take the tank to a dive shop and have it hydro tested for 35 bucks or so. You can pick up a CO2 regulator out of Harbor Freight. My Harbor Freight CO2 regulator is probably 9 years old now and keeps ticking along. The advantage the PowerTank regs have is they have large orifices inside the regulator that maintain flow even when the regs get iced up which happens with CO2 sometimes. Honestly I've been running a 20 lb tank and the HF reg for 9 years and never really had a problem with icing unless I was doing a lot of air tool work for some reason. Airing up tires gets the reg cold/frosty but I've never had the flow stop due to icing. At current prices you could have a new 10 lb CO2 tank for 50 to 70 dollars and 35 dollars for a reg from Harbor freight. Swap out the outlet for an airhose quick connect and you are in business. Not sure what current fill prices are for CO2 tanks I think I exchanged mine here in San Diego at the start of the year for less than 30 dollars and it's just now getting to the point that it needs to be re-filled. I have maybe one or two more trail runs left in it. May exchange it early just because. www.harborfreight.com/regulator-gauge-94841.htmlHere's my current setup. Apparently the design of the harbor freight regulator has changed over the years with a nicer adjustment knob haha. Might do some good to call around to the welding places and check to see what the initial buy in is for an exchange tank. All I know is that the prices for PowerTank equipment is ridiculous.

No one in the club has made one out a scuba tank as far as I know. If I remember correctly from my research before I bought my power tank, you have to change regulators. JChappy built a few 10 lb tanks for around $100.

it cost 85.00 for a new aluminum co2 tank, even cheaper if you find one used. The scuba tank would need a 320 valve and re hydro tested. It's do able but about the same price as new.
